This paper focuses on Mario Mieli’s critique of the capitalist economic system and in particular on the relations between the economic structure of society and the repression of homosexuality. Mieli, revisiting Marx’s concept of alienation, has pursued for all his life a revolutionary perspective and considered the emancipation from alienated work as a necessary step to sexual liberation. This paper also emphasizes how the marketization of homosexuality in the liberal society has led Mieli to a critique of the «society of the spectacle», so called by Guy Debord. It’s interesting how Mieli interprets theatre and transvestism as new forms of spectacle, capable of carrying out a prospect of ethical change and collective liberation.
