Prompting as a Socially Situated and Collectively Negotiated Media Practice

The paper aims to analyse prompt design not as a simple textual input used to activate AI systems, but as a dialogic and recursive process between user and model, grounded in dynamics of communicative co-construction. The study interprets prompting as a socially situated practice, developed through continuous feedback and collaborative forms of learning and collective negotiation among users within online communities dedicated to AI. By adopting a mixed methods approach, the research combines qualitative and quantitative tools to investigate the discursive and collaborative practices related to prompting.
Through non-participant digital ethnography and content analysis, the research examines two online communities dedicated to prompting (r/WritingPrompts on Reddit and LearnAITogether on Discord), in order to highlight how interactions among members foster community-driven forms of prompt design. The findings reveal the emergence of collaborative and performative modes of prompt construction, in which the social and informal learning processes embedded within these communities contribute both to improving the generative effectiveness of AI models and to shaping new forms of human-AI interaction.
