Classification and dynamic management models for digital collections from smart digital libraries to Artificial Intelligence. Challenges and perspectives

The growth of digitised and born-digital collections, the acceleration of digital transformation and the recent spread of Artificial Intelligence require a reconsideration of collection management models and practices. Digital libraries can no longer be treated as repositories of surrogates, images, files or static and closed records: they are environments in which resources are produced, described, published, linked, verified, versioned, corrected and reused. This paper proposes a theoretical and methodological dynamic model to manage digital collection, which integrates the concepts of digitisation, digital heritage, dynamic metadata, provenance, lifecycle, FAIR Principles, knowledge graph and AI-assisted cataloguing. The automatic classification of digital collections is interpreted not as the punctual and definitive attribution of a class, but as a documented, verifiable and versioning process in which AI contributes to producing hypotheses, recognitions and connections that must be traced back to responsibilities rooted in library, archival and digital-humanities principles and reflections.
