Abstract

During the archaeological excavations under the direction of Professor G. Bejor of the Università degli Studi of Milan in the ancient city of Gortys (Crete), where a big late ancient thermal complex is being excavated, a marble fragment of a male naked statue was recovered in 2004. The torso, in a bad state of preservation as for both the part preserved and its quality, must belong to the statue of a young male naked life size athlete, carved in the first roman period, but inspired to fifth century B.C. models, notably the Polykleitos of the Doryphoros and of his top artistic maturity.
