Abstract

Women in science in the Italian L2/LS classroom. A didactic proposal

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, held by the United Nations General Assembly on February 11, is an occasion to reflect on the fact that, in our society, we frequently consider knowledge as belonging to men, and women are absent or relegated to marginal spheres. The contributions of women, both in the past and present, together with their expertise and the difficulties they currently face in order to fully participate in society, have often been excluded from the cultural debate. Bearing this in mind, the role of the teacher is to promote equality by using or creating materials that can offset, as much as possible, this important absence. The paper presents a series of activities developed within the framework of a C1 Italian course held at the Centro de Idiomas de la Universidad of Málaga (Spain) for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Using the resources available on the page www. donnenellascienza.it, we invited students to reflect on the obstacles for women working in science and then discover more about some female scientists from the past.
