Abstract

Teaching strategies in multilingual classrooms: an experiment in a sports context

This paper presents some results of a study carried out within the Multisport project at the University for Foreigners in Siena. The article investigates the peculiarities of multilingual classes in the context of sports in general, and soccer in particular, in order to illustrate the main implications for the teaching of Italian. The results presented are based on a survey that involved 162 informants, including 30 Serie A professionals, 25 asylum-seeking players who play in the amateur league and 107 students from the Liceo Sportivo in Siena. Data was collected through a series of interviews, participant observation and with the use of a sociolinguistic questionnaire. These tools made it possible to analyze the linguistic profiles and needs of the informants. Using the information gathered during the research, the article proposes some classroom and field-based educational activities to motivate student-athletes. From the experiences in the field and in the classroom, among the teaching strategies that can be implemented in sports contexts are paths related to playful, multisensory, modular, action-oriented teaching, in the framework of cooperative learning.
