Abstract

At home in the world: reflections on teaching intercomprehension using blended learning

The RWTH Aachen Romance Studies Institute aims at creating didactic material related to the EuroComRom intercomprehensive strategies (cfr. Klein, Stegmann, 1999) in order to help university students develop multilingual competence and metalinguistic awareness. The premise of the project A casa nel mondo/In der Welt zu Hause (literally At home in the world) is to take advantage of students’ previous knowledge as well as similarities between Romance languages. This paper offers some theoretical considerations related to the creation of teaching materials and the benefits of both the flipped classroom and blended learning. These considerations are supported by data collection results among 15 students at the RWTH University Linguistic Center, whose answers are discussed and exemplified in the paper.
