Abstract

Female portraiture and descriptions of the environment in the novels of Contessa lara: notes for a stylistic–rhetorical investigation

This contribution focuses on the lexical, stylistic and rhetorical traits in the descriptions of spaces and female characters in three short stories by Contessa Lara (1849-1896). After a brief description of the linguistic and publishing scene after the unification of Italy, in particular regarding women, and a brief biographical and literary profile of the author, we focus on the figures of speech and formal and structural subtleties in those passages that particularly highlight the effectiveness, emphasis and elegance of realistic and decadent description, due in part to the trends in popular literature at the end of the 19th century. A moralistic and moving tone characterizes the Christmas tale analyzed, emphasizing the stylistic and thematic stereotypes of a sub-genre which was very popular at that time. We hope that these notes will add to the knowledge of an author whose colloquial and captivating prose helped the Italianization process of post-unification female readers, from a social and communicative point of view.
