Call for abstract: "The Mafia between continuity and transformation"

2026-03-23

the Rivista di studi e ricerche sulla criminalità organizzata launches a call inviting scholars to submit abstract proposals for a monographic issue dedicated to the in‑depth analysis of the mafia phenomenon, with particular attention to the dynamics of continuity and transformation that characterize Italian mafias. Original and particularly innovative contributions—whether theoretical and/or empirical—that address the topic from diverse methodological and disciplinary perspectives (ranging from sociology to law, from economics to history, from urban studies to cultural-educational, artistic-representational, and communication approaches) will be considered, fostering dialogue across approaches and analytical levels.

Preferred (but not exclusive) topics include:

  • Mafia and organized crime: interpretative challenges
  • Organizational models and actors of the mafias
  • History of Italian mafias
  • Mafias in the legal economy
  • Mafias and illegal markets
  • Mafia power and practices of social control
  • Forms of mafia expansion in non-traditional areas and abroad
  • Mafia and relational capital
  • Gender and mafias
  • Inter-organizational ties and criminal networks
