Abstract

The article analyses the role of mafia-type organisations in the Italian agri-food sector, with reference to the case of the Milan Wholesale Produce Market. By examining the main dynamics of criminal infiltration along the agri-food supply chain, the contribution focuses on the phases of logistics, distribution and wholesale trade, highlighting their economic attractiveness for mafia groups. The analysis also offers a critical reflection on the relationship between organised crime and the agricultural labour market, questioning whether labour exploitation can be directly attributed to mafia organisations.
