Abstract

ll saggio ha ad oggetto la legislazione di età Tudor nella materia della cura dei poveri. Durante il XVI secolo l'assistenza agli indigenti, originariamente rimessa alla Chiesa, alle corporazioni di mercanti e artigiani e alle confraternite religiose, successivamente al contributo volontario dei membri della comunità, viene affidata ai giudici di pace nell’ambito delle loro competenze amministrative e fiscali, incrementate e precisate dai Tudor. In particolare, l'attribuzione della cura dei bisognosi appare strettamente connessa alle originarie funzioni dei giudici di pace di mantenimento dell'ordine e della sicurezza sociale nel regno.
