Abstract

Learning the Italian language with Duolingo

The article has as its main focus Duolingo, an extremely popular app for language learning. The premise presents elements and data relating to the increasingly widespread use of portable learning devices and the concept of “mobile learning” and its advantages according to reference literature. The app is then presented, as well as the most recent studies on its efficacy, which are published on the official website of Duolingo itself. Building upon these ideas, the next phase of the article introduces a survey submitted to users of the app who study the Italian language, on whose answers a hypothetical profile of such learners - and therefore of their learning needs - is then outlined. The survey was posted on Facebook and Reddit, namely on digital environments that are widely known by users who are looking for online training courses; therefore, they embody a type of learner who can represent a new and dynamic field of research. The analysis of the results is intertwined with reflections on learning the Italian language with the aid of digital devices.
