Abstract

Italian in the linguistic landscape of Moscow

This article presents an interpretation of the space and role of Italian language in today’s Moscow static Linguistic Landscape (LL). The potential effects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, whose consequences may have affected the presence of the Italian language into the Russian capital, are taken into account. In 2019, a doctoral research investigated the perception of the presence of Italian in the static LL of the city, by university students of Italian as second or third FL. The study aimed at clarifying whether Italian was perceived as a stable and non-distinctive element in the multilingual and intercultural context of the city. The results seem to confirm that, despite the deterioration of the official relationships between Italy and the Russian Federation, the presence of the Italian in the LL of Moscow does not appear significantly compromised.
