DALLA CITIZEN SCIENCE ALLA DIDATTICA DELLA (SOCIO)LINGUISTICA: IL LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPE COME RISORSA PER LA DIDATTICA UNIVERSITARIA DI PRIMO LIVELLO

Nonostante il Linguistic Landscape (LL) sia ormai riconosciuto come un ambito di ricerca consolidato e abbia trovato diverse applicazioni anche nell’ambito della didattica delle lingue, questo approccio è stato finora impiegato solo in modo sporadico nell’ambito della didattica universitaria, e in particolare nell’insegnamento della linguistica. Questo contributo presenta un’attività sperimentale focalizzata sull’utilizzo del LL come strumento di riflessione linguistica, rivolta a studenti degli insegnamenti di Linguistica generale e Lingua e Società (Sociolinguistica), del corso di laurea triennale in Scienze della Comunicazione dell’Università di Torino. L'obiettivo è valutare se e in che misura l’approccio del LL possa rappresentare uno strumento efficace nella didattica della linguistica. La sperimentazione ha dimostrato come il LL possa costituire un punto di partenza privilegiato per introdurre concetti complessi della linguistica e della sociolinguistica, anche a studenti privi di conoscenze preliminari. Attraverso l’osservazione diretta di segni e testi nello spazio urbano, gli studenti hanno potuto riconoscere la pervasività dei fenomeni linguistici nella vita quotidiana, sviluppando così una prima consapevolezza critica rispetto al funzionamento dei codici e alle loro funzioni comunicative e simboliche. Questo approccio ha inoltre favorito un collegamento concreto tra didattica, ricerca e Citizen Science, trasformando gli studenti in co-produttori di dati e osservazioni utili anche in chiave scientifica.
FROM CITIZEN SCIENCE TO THE TEACHING OF (SOCIO)LINGUISTICS: THE LINGUISTIC LANDSCAPE AS A RESOURCE FOR UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING
Although Linguistic Landscape (LL) is recognized as an established field of research and has found various applications in language teaching, this approach has so far been used only sporadically in university teaching, particularly in linguistics. This contribution presents an experimental activity focused on the use of LL as a tool for linguistic reflection, aimed at students of General Linguistics and Language and Society (Sociolinguistics) in the three-year degree course in Communication Sciences at the University of Turin. The aim is to assess whether and to what extent the LL approach can be an effective tool in the teaching of linguistics. The study has shown that LL can be an excellent starting point for introducing complex concepts of linguistics and sociolinguistics, including to students with no prior knowledge. Through direct observation of signs and texts in urban spaces, students were able to recognize the pervasiveness of linguistic phenomena in everyday life, thus developing an initial critical awareness of how languages work and their communicative and symbolic functions. This approach also fostered a concrete link between teaching, research, and Citizen Science, turning students into co-producers of data and observations that are also useful from a scientific point of view.
