Abstract

Do simplified texts simplify life? A brief survey on the effectiveness of highly readable texts and the textual understanding of foreign students

In Italian schools there is more and more need to provide suitable tools for students facing the difficulty of learning Italian while learning in Italian. This article investigates the effectiveness of “high-readable texts”: foreign students with different levels of competence in Italian read different types of disciplinary texts, from the original text taken from a textbook, to three simplified versions of the same text; afterwards some simple comprehension exercises were proposed. The results highlighted that the complexity of the situation of foreign students in Italian schools was much more extensive than theory can portray, and there is a need for integrative and concrete tools to link the theories of teaching Italian as a second language to the urgent and changing reality of the students.
