Abstract

A, B, C… : 19th and 20th century presentatons and representations of the Italian alphabetic system

The graphemic inventory inherited from Latin has only recently taken on its definitive structure in Italy: the only partial biunivocal relationship between symbols and sounds and the presence of multipurpose, incongruous or redundant symbols prevented the stable and shared identification of the letters of the alphabet until the 20th century. Starting from these assumptions, this paper investigates how information concerning designation, gender, number, status of Italian graphemes are presented and defined within an extensive corpus of school textbooks intended for basic literacy (grammar and spelling books) printed or reprinted between the 1850s and the 1920s. The final goal is to verify whether and how much these ideas spread through school contributed, from the bottom-up and based on didactic needs, to configuring the graphemic inventory during the considered period, with much deeper effects than merely alphabetic-orthographical ones.
