Abstract

Analysis of errors in the written productions of fulfuldefoni learners of Italian foreign language in Cameroon

The present investigation focuses on the analysis of the written forms non-conforming with Standard Italian, produced by 36 bilingual students from Maroua, Camerun, attending their last year of High School, between the age of 17 and 20 years old. All subjects were raised from birth speaking two languages, that is the local language, Fulfulde, used in family and informal settings, and French, used as the official language in politics and education (predominant to the English language). The study shows how the students’ productions in Italian are subject to two distinct types of transfer: LM-1 transfer (Lingua Madre 1), which manifests through substitution and avoidance strategies in the grammatical structures of the target language, Italian, that are absent in the first mother tongue, Fulfulde, and LM-2 (Lingua Madre 2), which operates only In the grammatical structures in which both the target language, Italian and the other native tongue, French, display similarities. The study also aims to provide pedagogical suggestions based on the linguistic findings of this research, for all Italian teachers in Cameron who aim to better understand the influence and the impact of the multi language and multi cultural features of their students in the acquisition of Italian as a foreign language.
