Abstract

Business needs and language skills: placement tests

The presence of foreign workers in Italian companies requires adaptations, including at the linguistic level. More specifically, national legislation on job safety requires that all employees be able to successfully attend safety-training activities and demonstrate understanding of the generic and specific risks related to their professions. Therefore, companies that hire non-native workers have a real need for specific tools to measure their employees’ linguistic competence in Italian as a second language, which should be appropriate to the situations and texts used during on-the-job safety training. This study analyzes the case of a medium-sized company in the service sector that decided to adopt an internal language test for its foreign employees, and to structure the test on the linguistic specificities and content of typical courses on occupational safety and health. The resulting test is modular, brief and focuses both on general morphosyntactic aspects as well as on the specific vocabulary of job safety. The tool was tested on a small group of foreign employees and was subsequently adopted by the company.
