The University of the Philippines Diliman, founded in 1908, is the only tertiary academic institution in the Philippines that offers a degree program with a specialization in the Italian language. This paper aims to provide a panorama of the state of teaching and learning the Italian language as a degree proper in the Philippines, with special focus on the following aspects: the history and status quo of the institution of Italian as a specialization in the Department of European Languages, its past and current curriculum, a descriptive frequency analysis of the enrollment trends in the Italian classes offered by the Department of European Languages in the past fifteen years (i.e., from 2010 to 2025), the student motivations for learning Italian, and a statistical and corporal thematic analysis of the research trends based on the theses produced by the students specializing in Italian from 2015 to present. Recommendations include strengthening faculty development, which is fundamental to sustaining Italian language education, as well as increased visibility of employment opportunities that make use of the Italian language in the Philippines.
