Touristification and Identity in the Mexican Linguistic Landscape in Rome
This research is situated within the field of Linguistic Landscape studies and, more specifically, within studies on the LL of migration. It follows the theoretical and methodological line developed in previous investigations on the Hispanic LL of Rome.
The study aims to examine the commercial communicative signs of mexican migrant in the urban area of Rome between 2019 and 2025, with the objective of identifying changes in their distribution and in the communicative codes according to location, while assessing the potential impact of phenomena such as touristification and gentrification. The methodology adopted for this diachronic study employs a qualitative-quantitative approach which, on the basis of statistical data provided by the municipality of Rome, considers the commercial spanish signs of Mexican origin observed at different points in time (2019-2025), combined with semi-structured interviews with LL actors. This has allowed for an ethnographic reconstruction that sheds light on the stratification of social changes. Despite the minimal variation recorded in the statistical data regarding the mexican community residing in Rome over the observed period, the results reveal significant changes in the presence, configuration, and distribution of the community’s commercial LL, driven by economic processes, urban renewal and redistribution, touristification, and gentrification.
