Abstract

Speakers of other languages and the language italian opera: linguistic-retorical problems in Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini

This article analyzes the libretto of Manon Lascaut by Giacomo Puccini, but the study is applicable to all librettos. The research aimed at highlighting the difficulties – on the rhetorical-grammatical level, but above all on linguistic-lexical level – experienced by speakers of other languages study the language of Italian opera. The diachronic and diaphasic divergence between the language of melodrama, intended as a refined and poetic language, and standard and neostandard language, understood as the language of “communication”, taught in Italian L2 and LS contexts, generates difficulties in learning and understanding, as well as confusion between “archaic” and “modern” languages. Learner might find themselves lost regarding the re-use of the two languages: literary and language of use. The task of the teacher is also to highlight the differences between the two linguistic varieties so that the learner can reuse them in a correct and consistent way, according to the context.
