Abstract

Italian in the Netherlands: past, presence and future

The article describes the spread of the Italian language in Holland, as it has historically developed in the past, starting from the 16th century up to the last fifty years. It describes the gradual and limited process of teaching the Italian language in upper secondary school and at university, with a particular focus on the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht, highlighting the difficulties encountered by both teachers and students, as well as job opportunities for new graduates in Italian, in a future where the presence of Italian appears, however, uncertain.
