Abstract

The treatment of sentences without a verb in Italian grammars: reflections and didactic proposals

The article investigates how verbless clauses are treated in five high school grammar textbooks. Verbless clauses are very frequent structures in spoken and written language and their description in school grammars often fails to take into account their structural and functional diversity. This is mainly due to the fact that traditionally the sentence is understood only as a verbal sentence, and all structures that do not fit this model are excluded or considered a derivation of it. In addition to the definitions of nominal sentences, the number and type of exercises and any more or less implicit references in sections dealing with other topics were also analyzed. The analysis showed that although the grammars do not emphasize the heterogeneity and constitutive properties of verbless clauses, such as the definiteness of nouns and the reference they have, they do offer implicit considerations about the textual and discursive functions of these structures. For example, references to the verbless clauses in other chapters revealed the importance of these structures for the acquisition of speaking and listening skills.
