Abstract

Punctuation in the writing of semi-literate italians: the “letters” of Leo Spitzer

This paper explores a field of research which has been given only marginal attention: punctuation in the writing of the “semi-literate”. The investigation was conducted based on a corpus consisting of letters from Italian prisoners of war collected by the Romance language philologist Leo Spitzer during the First World War. After having illustrated the linguistic peculiarities of the missives, attention is focused on the use of inter-punctuation. The analysis reveals the emergence of a "textual conscience" in the semi-literate writers, who recognize the central role of punctuation in the structuring of the text and therefore make use of it even with outcomes that sometimes deviate from the norm.
