Abstract

The linguistic landscape and multilingualism: Chinese and Italian (and other languages) on Chinese commercial signage in Bologna

 

This study investigates the linguistic landscape of Bologna, focusing on the interaction of Chinese with Italian and other languages in commercial signage. Combining analysis of 192 signs with 24 semi-structured interviews, it examines language use, identity construction, and cultural mediation among Chinese shop owners. Using Hymes’ SPEAKING model, results show bilingualism is common, with Italian and English dominating in the historic center, while Chinese is more prominent in local immigrant areas, reflecting community cohesion. Language use also varies by generation: first-generation immigrants preserve traditional forms, whereas second-generation entrepreneurs adopt innovative, internationally oriented practices. Signage functions as a site of negotiation between visibility, cultural identity, and social integration in multicultural contexts.
