Abstract

The article reflects on the acquisition of Italian verb moods and tenses by Chinese students. Many studies have highlighted the recurring order in the sequence of acquisition of the verb system, which is, as is well known, one of the major difficulties for foreign learners who study Italian. This paper focuses on a sample of Chinese college students who attended an intensive Italian course at the University of Milan, to verify if and to what extent the skills shown by the learners are in line with the recurring order in light of the acquisitional linguistics. In the first part we will analyze some exercises taken from tests administered to students at the B1 level of the CEFR at the end of the course, focusing on the acquisition of the imperfect tense and its use in alternation with the simple past. This will be followed, in the second part, with the study of unstructured production written during the same exam, thanks to which we will make some comments on the use of other tenses normally used by students at more advanced level, such as the conditional and subjunctive. The final interpretation of the data collected led to some observations on the influence of the L1 on the evolution of the learners' inter-language.
