Call for Contributions # 25-26 (2026-2027)

25-03-2026

“L’uomo nero. Materiali per una storia delle arti della modernità” is an online,
open access journal, edited by Cactus – Contemporary Art Research Center at the
University of Milan and published by Milano University Press
(https://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/uomonero/index).
The next issue, # 25-26, edited by Davide Colombo, will be released in Spring
2027 and will be divided as usual into two main sections: one monographic and
the other free-themed.
The monographic section of issue # 25–26 will be entitled L’Uomo Nero Remix
and will be dedicated to a wide range of artistic research developed between the
1960s and 1980s, characterised by the ‘remixing’ of media, tools and extra-artistic
procedures as visual practices. The focus is not on a purely technological or mediabased
approach, but on a cross-cutting analysis rooted in the artists’ work, which
highlights the motivations, critical stances and expressive strategies that guided
the assimilation and reconditioning of technical-scientific, informational and
communicative practices. In this dialogue between different domains, the metacritical
vocation of artistic research offers a field of ‘hybridisations’ in which
systems designed to know, measure, organise or transmit become devices for
questioning, shifting and, at times, subverting language and artistic practice.
Possible themes of investigation related to concepts, theoretical principles,
mechanisms, and non-artistic procedures used by artists include, but are not
limited to:
• randomness;
• entropy;
• rhizome;
• information;
• interactivity;
• simulation;
• systems of understanding, organisation and control;
• deskilling/reskilling.

Two additional sections complete the issue: Fuoritema (Off topic) will feature a
selected number of articles focused on topics not related to the monographic
theme; Rarità, riscoperte, segnalazioni (Rarities, Rediscoveries, Highlights) will
collect shorter contributions: announcements, reports, discussions on small sets
of sources, as well as short critical essay and, possibly, reviews.
The issue will also include contributions by artists (by invitation only).

From 1st to 20th July 2026, all scholars interested in contributing to the issue are
invited to upload their article proposals via the online procedure available on the
