Abstract

The language of literature migrants:

italian and maghreb identity in the novels of Amara Lakhous

The literature of migration in Italy is an accidental phenomenon, still quite new; it is a result of the massive influx of migrants during the last two decades of the twentieth century. Among writers active in Italy, Arabic-speaking writers are especially numerous.

Amara Lakhous is an author who focuses on the literature of migration from the Arab world, Maghreb in particular. His novels have emerged in the panorama of Italian literature, offering a glimpse of the transformation towards our current multicultural society. Of great interest are his linguistic choices that reveal an obvious intention to act as a bridge between L1 and L2, as well as to establish linguistic comparison, a dialectic between codes where neither the starting or ending points are the same as before the meeting. This mutual influence, this dynamic relationship derives from the assertion of both the identities of migrants and Italians.
