Words Beyond the Water: The Linguistic Landscape of a Symbolic Neighborhood in the City of Parma
This jointly authored article is the outcome of a collaboration between two researchers from different fields (sociology and linguistics) and presents the results of a photographic survey and subsequent analysis of the linguistic landscape of the Oltretorrente, the most traditionally popular and multicultural neighborhood in Parma. In line with current research practices, data collection was conducted with the aid of a digital tool (the Lingscape app: https://lingscape.app/) and complemented by qualitative data gathered through interviews with key actors shaping the linguistic landscape. The photographic corpus yielded quantitative insights into the written presence of languages other than Italian, their relationships in terms of linguality and distribution, and the directional patterns conveyed by the signage. The analysis also provided reflections on the status of both the local dialect (parmigiano) and the main global lingua franca (English) within the neighborhood’s written linguistic landscape. Meanwhile, the interview data shed light on how residents and visitors perceive the neighborhood’s multilingualism and its written representations. Taken together, the two corpora form the basis for a more comprehensive mapping of Parma’s linguistic landscape and suggest possible directions for reusing the photographic material within the frame of language education.
