Immigrant languages in a superdiverse neighbourhood of Florence: the case of arabic
The present study analyses the linguistic landscape (LL) of S. Lorenzo, one of the most socially dynamic neighbourhoods in Florence. This area, besides being affected by the phenomenon of touristification, is also one of the areas that most clearly reflects the linguistic presence of the various immigrant communities that have settled in Florence over time. Although multiple immigrant languages are present in the LL of S. Lorenzo, this study will focus on the Arabic language. More specifically, considering that Arabic is characterised not only by Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), but also by Classical Arabic and a range of dialectal varieties, the aim of this work is to examine the forms, contents, and functions of the S. Lorenzo Arabic LL. Attention will be given to identifying the varieties in which Arabic occurs and determining the linguistic features and communicative functions of the collected Arabic texts. This study further investigates language contact between Arabic and other languages and specifically instances of code-switching phenomena, to highlight the multiplicity of meanings that Arabic expresses within the superdiverse context of the S. Lorenzo neighbourhood.
