Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • originality of the contribution, which has not been previously published, has not been submitted, and will not be submitted to another publisher while the peer review process for Stato, Chiese e pluralismo confessionale is ongoing;
  • inclusion of URLs for references to websites and documents available online;
  • compliance of the text with the Guidelines provided on this same page.

Author Guidelines

Submission of manuscripts: Authors shall submit their manuscripts, in Word format, to the following email address: rivista.statoechiese@unimi.it, in two versions, one identifiable and one anonymous.

The latter, intended for evaluation, must not include in the heading the author’s name or the name of their affiliated university, nor any reference—within the text, footnotes, or metadata—that could reveal their identity; however, it shall retain an indication of the author’s academic position.

To speed up the peer-review process and facilitate the work of the Editorial Board, authors are encouraged to use the Template in Word format available for download.

By submitting the contribution, the Author guarantees full compliance with the above requirements.

Submissions that do not conform to the required criteria will not be considered or sent for peer review.

Once the Editorial Office has confirmed receipt of the submission, the Author will not be permitted to make any modifications to it until the outcome of the peer review process has been communicated. Any changes to the text made after the peer review process must be highlighted in red.

Language: manuscripts may be written in Italian, English, French, or Spanish.

Abstract: The contributions must be accompanied by two ABSTRACTS, each no longer than 200 words, in Italian (or in the language chosen by the Author for the text) and in English (or, where applicable, in Italian), placed on the first page of the contribution.

Keywords: authors must provide up to five keywords, in both Italian and English, to enhance the discoverability and indexing of the manuscript.

Personal and Institutional Identifiers: Authors must include the following information in the heading:

  • full name
  • current position
  • subject taught (for academics)
  • institutional affiliation (if any)

at the end of the text:

  • institutional email address
  • ORCID identifier (see below)
  • ROR code of their institution (see below)

ORCID Identifier (Open Researcher and Contributor ID): It is necessary to provide your ORCID identifier so that the contribution can be uniquely associated with the Author. At the time of publication, the Author will receive an email containing a link to be clicked within three days in order to authorize the association and visibility of the contribution on their ORCID profile.

ROR Identifier (Research Organization Registry): it is also necessary to indicate the ROR code of your affiliated institution, which will be included in the contribution and will be visible among the metadata of the article once published. The ROR Code is particularly relevant for academic institutions and research bodies. In some cases, it may be omitted, subject to case-by-case evaluation.

Editorial Criteria: In drafting their manuscripts (in order to limit the workload of the Editorial Board), Authors must comply with the following criteria, which are facilitated by using the template available for download on this same page.

Page Layout: top margin: 4 cm; bottom margin: 3 cm; left margin: 3.5 cm; right margin: 4 cm. Font: Palatino, for both text and footnotes. Font size: 12 for the main text; 10.5 for the table of contents; 10 for footnotes; 11 for the Author’s academic position and for in-text quotations. Paragraph formatting: alignment justified; indentation left 0 cm, right 0 cm; first-line indentation 1.25 cm for the main text and 0.5 cm for footnotes. Spacing: before 0 pt; after 0 pt. Line spacing: single, for both text and footnotes.

Title: the title of the contributions in the language of the text (in bold lowercase, centered, font size 12) must, for layout reasons, not exceed 120 characters. The same title in another language (English or Italian) must be in lowercase italics, centered, font size 11.

Author’s Position: immediately below the name of the Author, the exact and full academic position, teaching subject, university affiliation, and department will be indicated in round brackets (plain text, centered, font size 11), without any additional qualifications (e.g. professional titles). For non-university contributors, the institutional position or only the academic degree will be indicated.

This will be followed by the ABSTRACTS (plain text, font size 11) and a SUMMARY (term in bold uppercase), which will reproduce the section headings identified by Arabic numerals (in bold lowercase, justified, font size 10.5), separated by a hyphen [e.g.: SUMMARY: 1. Introduction - 2. The Casati Law - 3. Law No. 100 of 1890 - 4. Conclusions].

The use of multi-level paragraph numbering (e.g. 1.1, 1.2.a, etc.) must be avoided and replaced with a standard sequential numbering system.

Print Publication: if the contribution is also intended for print publication, the publisher (if already known) and the details of the forthcoming publication (e.g. conference proceedings, festschriften, encyclopedias, journals, etc.) shall be indicated.
For this purpose, the title shall be followed by an asterisk, with a corresponding footnote on the opening page, immediately preceding the footnotes [e.g.: * The contribution, subject to review, is intended for publication in the volume edited by M. Bianchi, Le congrue, published by Pelle Publishing House; or in Giurisprudenza piemontese; or in the Proceedings of the Conference on “I benefici”, organized by the Faculty of Urbe and held in Rome on 7–8 July 1920, published by Pelle Publishing House].

Quotations and Quotation Marks: Quotations in the body of the text and/or footnotes of passages by other authors, or excerpts from documents, must be presented in plain text (and not in italics, except where it is expressly indicated, in justified cases, that italics have been added) within double quotation marks (e.g.: “Tanuccism and Josephinism ...”).

If the quoted passage itself contains a quotation, the latter must be placed in double quotation marks, while the former must be placed in angle quotation marks (« ») (e.g.: «He used to assert – “emphatically”, according to Cavour – that religion …»).

Single quotation marks (‘ ’) may be used sparingly to emphasize specific concepts or expressions.

Quotations exceeding three lines in length (excluding footnotes) shall be presented as block quotations, enclosed in quotation marks, font size 11, preceded and followed by a blank line (spacing 0.4), and indented 1 cm from both the left and right margins. Such quotations must reproduce the original text faithfully, even where it does not comply with these editorial criteria.

Dates and references to judicial decisions (in both text and footnotes) shall be given in full (e.g.: “10 October 2010”, not “10.10.2010”; “judgment no. 148 of 2011”, not “judgment 148/2011”). The usual abbreviations are permitted (e.g.: p., pp., cfr.,vol., s., ss., cit., Id., Ead., l., l. cost., l. reg., d.l., d.lgs., sent., ord., cost., c.c., c.p.c., c.p., c.p.p. ).  Non-standard abbreviations should be avoided (e.g.: “see” instead of “v.”, “for example” instead of “e.g.”, “especially” instead of “spec.”, “particularly” instead of “part.”, “paragraph” instead of “c.” or “co.”, “so-called” instead of “c.d.”, etc.), as well as simplified reference forms (e.g.: idem, ibidem, op. cit., infra, supra). For numbering paragraphs, ordinal numbers must be used (e.g.: “fourth paragraph” instead of “paragraph 4”), except where the original legal text provides numbered paragraphs (in which case, for example, art. 11.7).

Footnotes: footnotes shall be placed at the bottom of the page and numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals. In the text, punctuation follows, and does not precede, the footnote number. Authors are reminded that, pursuant to copyright law, any summary, quotation, or reproduction of a work must always be accompanied by an indication of the title of the work, the name of the author, the publisher, and, where applicable, the translator, where such information appears in the reproduced work.

Bibliographical References: bibliographical references in footnotes shall indicate the Author’s first-name initial followed by the surname (in uppercase bold letters), the title of the work (in italics), and, in order, the publisher, place of publication, and year (in roman type). Where there is more than one Author, their names shall be separated by commas rather than by hyphens. Journal titles, encyclopedias, websites, and databases shall be italicized. In subsequent references to the same work, only the Author’s name and a shortened version of the title (sufficient to avoid ambiguity) shall be provided, followed by “quot.” For multi-volume works or works in multiple tomes, the relevant volume and tome must be indicated in lowercase and in Roman numerals (e.g. vol. XI, t. I). Page numbers must be preceded by the abbreviations “p.” or “pp.” respectively. If the reference extends beyond the cited page, “s.” is used for the immediately following page (e.g. p. 18 s.), or “ss.” for multiple subsequent pages (e.g. p. 18 ss.). For works that have appeared in multiple editions, the edition consulted must be indicated using Arabic numerals with a superscript “a” (e.g. 4ª ed.), before the publisher’s name. The names of editors of a work (with the initial of the first name preceding the surname, capitalised only for initials) must appear in small caps and in roman type, preceded by the full expression “edited by”. The names of translators must be in roman small caps, preceded by the phrase “Italian translation by”. The indication of the issue or part of a journal is given in roman type in Roman numerals.

In cases of citations of institutions, the names of the institutions should be formatted in bold small capitals, with capitalization applied only to the initials of all words (es.: Comitato Europeo Per La Libertà Religiosa).

Particular attention shall be taken to ensure proper alignment in footnotes of references to Internet sources, which shall be set in lowercase italics, in the shortest possible form, without quotation marks, preferably enclosed in round brackets, and with the date of access indicated only where necessary.

For citations of contributions published in this Journal, the same rules apply; however, the full name of the Journal, the indication “online journal,” the URL, the issue number, and the year (from 2012 onwards) must be provided, or alternatively the month of publication and the year (for the period 2007–2011).

BIANCHI, Il giuseppinismo, in Stato, Chiese e pluralismo confessionale, cit., giugno 2007.

Hyperlinks, underlining, and any colouring other than black are not permitted (both in the text and in footnotes), as well as any graphical highlighting other than bold and italics (for which sparing use is recommended), and non-standard abbreviations. Expressions of thanks and/or dedications are not allowed. Page breaks and hyphenation used for line breaking must not be inserted. The use of tables that are not strictly necessary should also be avoided (due to layout constraints).

The Editorial Board—having verified compliance with the above criteria and, where necessary, made minor modifications required to ensure full adherence—will convert the contributions into PDF format in order to guarantee that they cannot be altered by third parties. By submitting the article, the Author consents to the text being subject to any modifications deemed necessary by the Editorial Board to comply with the editorial guidelines, as well as with syntactic or orthographic requirements.

In the case of duly authorised publication of contributions already published in foreign journals, whether print or online, not all of the editorial criteria of this journal may be applied, particularly with regard to citation style.

The Editorial Board reserves the right not to accept submissions that lack scientific character, or that are predominantly divulgative, political, or propagandistic in nature, or that do not comply with the editorial criteria or with applicable criminal and press law.

Reproduction Rights: Pursuant to Article 42(6) of Law No. 633 of 1941, the Author of a journal article is entitled to reproduce it elsewhere, provided that full reference is made to its first publication, indicating in full the name of this Journal [followed by the website reference; e.g.: previously published in State, Churches and Religious Pluralism, online journal (https://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/statoechiese), no. 12 of 2012] and not only the name of the website.  It is further recommended that, in subsequent citations of contributions first published in this Journal, reference be made not only to the print version but also to the original online edition, including the number of the issue and the year.

Editorials: in the section “A chiare lettere” (editorials, debates, transitions), contributions by the Editor-in-Chief are signed using initials only (n.m.); contributions by other Authors shall be signed with their full name.
