Abstract

On the basis of new materials found during decades of research conducted on Roman documentation and of a broader historiographical framework, this paper reconsiders the theme of the Roman imbreviature of the 11th‐13th centuries (the socalled dicta) already treated by Alessandro Pratesi in 1955 with other perspectives. Although the results are still partial, the sketched picture sheds more light on the medieval Roman documentary system and offers new research suggestions about the practices related to the production of private documents in the Rome of the time.
