The translator as author

[Lecture given at APICE Seminar about Roger Chartier’s book “La mano dell’autore, la mente dello stampatore. Cultura e scrittura nell’Europa moderna", University of Milan, Milan, 24th May 2016.]
Translation shifts a text from the ‘original’ linguistic dimension to a different one, within new context, language and culture. There are, at the same time, loss, addiction, and adjustment. This process is not obvious in case of similar languages, but in translations from highly different languages it converts the translator into an author.
