Abstract

Background: in the 21^st century, adult people with severe Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), still encounter countless obstacles to accessing public health services and the healthcare they need. They must have the same opportunities as any other person to access the benefits they need, for this reason we speak of “equal” rights and not of “special” rights.

The nurse can be the key figure in responding to the needs of care that remain unsatisfied both of the user and their families, and the link for those services that exist in the territory.

Objectives: to identify the real and potential role that the nurse plays, or could play, in the care path of users with ASD.

Methods: narrative review of the literature in the main databases (Cinahl, Cochrane, Pubmed, Ilisi, APA PsycInfo) concerning nursing care for adult users with severe ASD and their families.

Results: the family and community nurse have the skills to play a role of health promotion and prevention, facilitating user access to public health services and reducing social and health discrimination. Assistance to the family would be directed to support (counseling), information, with regard to the services available in the area addressed to social-health care and health education on what is the pathology.

Conclusions: is necessary to increase the basic training of nurses, with specific teaching material to increase knowledge and that a post-basic training (university master) is established for this type of disorder.
