Abstract

BACKGROUND:
The study is aimed at investigating the topic of female genital mutilation, given the growing impact of the phenomenon, which is connected to the migratory flows involving the Italian territory, and the topic of obstetric training and competence in this regard.

 AIM:
To describe the degree of theoretical and experiential knowledge of midwives in the Italian panorama regarding the topic of female genital mutilation.

METHODS:
Cross-sectional observational study on a sample of 197 midwives recruited through convenience sampling on social platforms from 01/03/2023 to 02/28/2023.

RESULTS:
Primarily midwives in the 31-40 age group participated, who are found to be, who appear to have greater educational preparation on the subject of female genital mutilation, although less evidence on a practical level. 45% of the participants declare that they have explored the topic in depth during their training, while 60% have come across similar cases during their work experience. The study hightlights that midwives are not always prepared by universities to deal with cases of female genital mutilation,  also due to the migration situation in Italy.

CONCLUSIONS:
It would be appropriate to create in-depth courses that address the topic to train people who have not had the opportunity to do so in the past, and update those who have already had the opportunity to delve into it in greater depth.
