BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a significant issue among European adults, with prevalence ranging from 12% to 43.5%. In Italy, 21.7% of hospitalized patients suffer from pain, often associated with sleep disturbances and emotional changes.
AIMS: To describe the prevalence of pain and satisfaction with its treatment in adult patients hospitalized in medical, surgical, onco-hematological, and trauma units.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted at Niguarda Hospital in Milan on 391 patients hospitalized for at least 24 hours. Data were collected through paper questionnaires assessing pain intensity and treatment satisfaction.
RESULTS: 36% of patients reported pain at the time of data collection, with higher prevalence in trauma and surgical wards. Satisfaction with pain treatment was high, with 84% of patients finding the therapy effective.
DISCUSSION: The results indicate an increase in pain prevalence compared to previous studies, but also very high levels of patient satisfaction with treatment, which remains a priority to improve patients' quality of life.
