BACKGROUND: According to OCSE and FNOPI, in Italy there is currently a shortage about 65000 nurses. Among the causes of this lack of professionals, recently there has been a decrease in attractiveness of the profession and a progressive reduction in enrolments in the Degree Course in Nursing. Aim: Explore the reasons that leads graduating students to undertake a degree course in Nursing or to exclude it as their future course of study.
METHODS: A qualitative survey was conducted involving thirty-nine students from nine different High Schools picked out through convenience sampling. Live interviews were conducted, audio-recorded and then analysed using the Colaizzi’s Method.
RESULTS: The data analysis enable to define three main themes with related sub-themes: “nurse”, “student’s education” and “student’s motivation”. The results show that, among all the students interviewed, two choose to apply to the Degree Course in Nursing, six include it among their possible options and the others choose another degree course.
CONCLUSION: The study confirms what is reported in the literature: students choose the nursing profession primarily due to vocation and personal predisposition. External factors such as school guidance, social influences, and perception of the profession play a lesser role. However, unclear ideas about the choice emerge, suggesting the need for school orientation initiatives involving Nursing Degree students to promote greater awareness.
