Abstract

BACKGROUND:
in recent years, the figure of the caregiver in the care of chronic patients at home has become increasingly popular. High levels of burden in caregivers can have negative consequences on quality of life in addition to the potential risk of developing psychiatric symptoms or cardiovascular diseases.

AIM: assess caregiver burden levels and measure the risk of developing depression.

METHODS:
cross-sectional study conducted in the period of December 2022 in a sample of caregivers of the ASL BT. The questionnaire administered consisted of a section with socio-demographic data and a section with the Zarit Burden Interview that investigates the levels of burden in the caregiver.

RESULTS:
92 caregivers (92%) participated in the study. Of these, 62 (67.4%) were women while 55.4% lived with the patient. Moderate burden levels were highlighted in 50% of those examined, in particular, in women (58.1%), in caregivers aged 46 to 50 years (86.6%) and in 49% of caregivers living together with the patient. 88.1% have a high risk of developing depression mainly women (RR: 1.55;  p=.166) and caregivers aged 61-65 (RR=3.46;  p=.286); the risk of developing depression was significantly observed in caregivers living with the patient (RR=2.17; p=.045) contrary to those under 45 years of age (RR=0.14; p<.001).

CONCLUSION:
respondents had a moderate burden and a high risk of developing depression. It is urgent to experiment with preventive and curative interventions by health and social professionals in favour of the caregiver.
