BACKGROUND:
In Italy in 2020, 55.000 new breast cancer diagnoses have been estimated. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a first prevention tool aimed to women of any age inducing them, in case of suspicious changes, to perform more in-depth diagnostic investigations. Despite the enormous potential and importance of this practice, it is still not widespread and properly used enough. In order to educate women in the proper performance of BSE, it is appropriate for the nurse students to acquire specific knowledge in this area as well.
AIM:
This study aims to construct and validate an instrument to investigate knowledge regarding breast self-examination among female students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (CLI) program at the University of Milan.
METHODS:
Descriptive observational study on convenience sampling consisting of all female CLI students at UniMi. Administration of a questionnaire created and developed based on the literature. Subsequent proposal of an informative video.
RESULTS:
Of the 155 questionnaires administered, it can be seen that 81.9% know the practice of breast self-examination, but only 51.6% perform it with an increase in knowledge with significantly higher scores from the second year onward (p=0.001). A minority of female students feel confident in the technique of performing it. The 48.4% do not practice breast self-examination.
CONCLUSIONS:
The study conducted shows good knowledge of BSE but poor practice of it. Implementing BSE training of the nursing student can enable proper education towards the female population
