BACKGROUND: Integrating the perspective of young users into care pathways ensures the possibility of incorporating priorities and aspects not generally investigated, allowing adolescents and their parents to participate in the construction of a quality healthcare system. In particular, patient experience in healthcare delivery is emerging as an important area of knowledge and development. However, there is no contribution in the literature that analyzes the viewpoints of adolescents, parents, nurses, and doctors regarding their perception of the definition of patient experience.
Objective: To investigate the viewpoints of adolescents, parents, nurses and doctors regarding the definition of patient experience in the hospitalization of adolescents for acute illness.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a convenience sample of participants consisting of an equal number of doctors (P), nurses (I), adolescents (A), and parents (G) (4 for each profile). All participants were asked the following question: "How would you define the adolescent's experience, called patient experience in English, during hospitalization for acute illness?"
RESULTS:The study identified 5 themes: memory of hospitalization, technical-professional skills, hospitalization satisfaction, relational skills, hospital environment, and facilities. These five themes were identified by coding eighteen significant phrases.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the results of the semi-structured interviews are highly relevant to the definition of patient experience, although some overlap with the concept of patient satisfaction still persists.
