Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Nursing leadership plays an essential role in achieving the goals of the UN Agenda 2030, based on the 17 SDGs. There is an overlap between the SDGs and nursing ethical principles. The responsibilities of nursing leaders include ensuring the application of ethical principles in nursing care and creating a work environment with high ethical standards. Therefore, nursing managers influence an organization's values, attitudes, and behaviors.

OBJECTIVES:
To explore the role of nursing leadership in an ethical and sustainable context

METHOD:
A literature review was performed between March and June 2024, analyzing the available literature through the PubMed database.

RESULTS:
The results indicate that leadership in nursing is critically important. It can influence patient satisfaction, nursing workload, and turnover. Despite the ontological duty to the figure of the nurse manager itself, the correlation between nursing leadership and ethical and sustainable outcomes is still hidden. The cause appears to lie in the managerial class's lack of education on the specific topic.

CONCLUSION:
Many studies have analyzed the topic of the SDGs for nursing professionals. In this ethical and sustainability-inspired reasoning, it is important to include the head of the nursing supply chain: the nurse manager. Thus, it would be appropriate to consider ethics and sustainability an identity element of nursing management and overhaul the educational and organizational system to make this relationship inseparable.
