Abstract

Introduction
Adolescence is a developmental phase characterized by significant physical, psychological, and social changes. During hospitalization, adolescents are particularly vulnerable, often experiencing boredom and emotional distress. This review aims to analyze the determinants of boredom during hospitalization and identify strategies to mitigate it.

Methods
A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Psychinfo, and Scopus databases. Articles focusing on hospitalized adolescents with acute illnesses were included. Study selection and analysis were performed following PRISMA guidelines.

Results
Twelve studies were identified, highlighting isolation, inadequate hospital facilities, and prolonged hospitalization as the main determinants of boredom in adolescents. Preventive strategies included the use of interactive technologies, recreational activities, and parental involvement. However, the scarcity of specific studies, particularly in the Italian context, emphasizes the need for further research.

Conclusions
Boredom represents a significant issue for hospitalized adolescents, negatively affecting their psychological well-being and the quality of their hospitalization experience. It is essential to implement targeted strategies involving adolescents, parents, and healthcare professionals to improve the hospital experience and support recovery.
